When Watson returned early to find the flat empty as he expected, his head swam with the distinctness of the air. Though he'd visited a hundred times before, though he'd recognized the instruments he was inhaling, the particular aromatic symphony that swayed him was more.  

Not merely the exotic leaf from the exclusive tobaccoist who catered specifically to Sherlock's peculiar tastes, not just the abundance of pine sap from the rosin used on the violins bow, and not simply the wafting of aged bourbon from the decanter beside the chair. 

It was the alchemy of all these in the room whose walls were lined with volumes bound in deep mahogany leather. Watson felt taken entirely with the wonderful scent and was startled to find he'd been standing in the doorway still, some thirty minutes later, when Sherlock returned.
